Revolutionizing Wi-Fi Networks: The Advantages and Working of Open Roaming

Openroaming is a new concept in wireless networking that allows users to connect to Wi-Fi networks seamlessly without needing to enter login credentials or other authentication information each time they connect to a new network. It is a standard developed by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) that enables devices to connect to any Wi-Fi network using a single set of credentials. In this blog, we will examine the booming advantages and working of Open Roaming.

The Problem with Traditional Wi-Fi Networks

Traditional Wi-Fi networks require users to go through an authentication process every time they want to connect to a new network. This method applies by entering a user's credentials or using other methods such as QR codes or NFC tags. This can be unmanageable and time-consuming, especially when a user needs to connect to multiple networks throughout the day. This authentication process also presents a security risk, as hackers can exploit it to gain unauthorized access to the network.

The Advantages of Open Roaming

It addresses these issues by allowing users to connect to Wi-Fi networks seamlessly without needing authentication. This saves time and makes accessing Wi-Fi networks in public spaces such as airports, coffee shops, and shopping malls easier.

In addition, with this, users can connect to any Wi-Fi network that is part of the WBA ecosystem using a single set of credentials. This reduces the need for multiple usernames and passwords and provides a more streamlined experience.

It also provides enhanced security by using a secure authentication protocol. It operates Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to confirm a secure connection between the user's device and the Wi-Fi network. This ensures the user's credentials are protected and prevents hackers from intercepting the authentication process.

How does it work?

It creates a federation of Wi-Fi networks that are part of the WBA ecosystem. Each network in the federation shares a standard set of security policies and authentication protocols, allowing users to connect to any network using a single set of credentials.

Authentication uses a digital certificate issued to the user's device when connecting to a network. This certificate is then used to authenticate the user's device on any federation network.

To use this network , users must register for an account with a participating provider. This account will contain their authentication credentials, such as username and password. Then, when they connect to a Wi-Fi network that is part of the WBA ecosystem, their device will automatically detect the web and use their credentials to authenticate with the network.
